Welcome to Japan
In an exhibition will be showcased 25 original photographies, which were printed in Japan in albumen silver print technique and hand-colored with anilin in the late 19th century.
The images represent recurring themes of the ancient Japanese culture depicting rural scenes, architecture, the living at home; the characters, portrayed in traditional dresses, are caught in their everyday life (for example during the preparation of tea, writing a letter, singing, playing instruments etc.). Several images are showing buddhist temples and location with particular historical and architectural signicance.
The photographies – mostly taken and printed by anonymous artists of the school of Yokohama – are in an extremely good condition and of exceptional quality as well as of highly appreciated pictorial and photographic value. With an exhibition of these precious photographies is aimed to raise awareness of the uses and costumes of the traditional and ancient Japan.
